In the Fall semester of 1994, the founding sisters of alpha Kappa Delta Phi at the University of Houston worked earnestly to bring together its charter class. The founding sisters Geossie Bumanglag, Thu Kim Do, Angela Lee, Tam Madonna Nguyen, Michelle Shen, and Hannah Tran, had been working towards becoming a part of a greater organization while they were little sisters of Lambda Phi Epsilon. As little sisters they realized the great need for an Asian-interest sorority on campus, so they took their first steps toward sisterhood. In the Spring semester of 1994 they formed the local sorority known as Delta Phi Omega. As sisters of Delta Phi Omega, their purpose was to create an environment which promotes sisterhood and Asian awareness as well as academic excellence and leadership skills.
Through their experiences as sisters of this local sorority they felt as if they were traveling through unchartered territory, so they decided to seek guidance. At a sisterhood conference they attended during the summer of 1994, the girls familiarized themselves with several Asian sororities. In the end, the former sisters of Delta Phi Omega knew alpha Kappa Delta Phi was best for them, so with further determination they ventured forward seeking new members. Working through the summer, the founding sisters attended many functions in hopes of meeting other dedicated individuals to become a part of their Charter Class. By the close of summer, a great interest in the sorority developed and continued to grow at the U of H campus. Many rush events took place that eventually led to the creation of the Charter Class. Among the new members were Linda Diec, Joyce Gabiola, Grace Kwon, Lisa Mungkornpanich, and Chi Nguyen. Along with these fine htmiring young ladies, the founding sisters formed the Charter Class of alpha Kappa Delta Phi at the University of Houston.
As the newly formed Charter Class, each sister pledged to respect the bonds ofsisterhood and uphold the sacred oaths of the sorority. By attending service projects benefiting the community, spending time with all the sisters, and striving toward academic excellence, the sisters at U of H have exemplified the purpose on which alpha Kappa Delta Phi is based.
